This first week I learned something that was new to me: The difference between Information Technology and Information Systems. IT is hardware, software and telecom while IS is comprised of the same components and people in addition.
From reading chapter one in the book I got a better understanding of the role of IS in the organization and in business in general, and I also got a better understanding of why this is important for me to learm about.
However, it is not hard for me to understand the increasingly important role of ISM in todays organization. Upon graduating with my BSBA in marketing I spent two years working full time in an IT-company in Oslo, Norway. This company (www.mamut.com )developed, programmed, sold, marketed, supported etc. Enterprise Resource Planning Systems to small and medium sized businesses. I worked in marketing, but in order to sell and market these systems we worked closely together with R&D, Sales and Support. I worked mainly with Search Engine Optimization of the Danish web page, and I would like to go back and work in IT again upon graduating with my MBA.
Hence, I think I understand and appreciate the increasing importance of IT and IS and look forward to learning more about this subject in this class.
